Featured Research - ForSight

In 1997 the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there were close to 150 million individuals with significant visual disability. This research aims to address this problem by developing technology to restore sight in the visually impaired. Electronic devices will sense a person's surroundings. This information will then be processed to a suitable form and delivered to the person's visual system via direct stimulation of the cortex or through the person's other senses.

Early research efforts are concentrating on a solution inspired by bats. Ultrasound waves map the region surrounding the person and this spatial information is passed through their auditory system. Ultimately it is hoped this will allow them to see the objects around them.
